The Bert Jansch Foundation aims to sustain the creativity associated with Bert Jansch and his music by helping in the education and promotion of future generations of acoustic musicians.

Its activities will include supporting academic and musical institutions and their students through workshops and scholarships. It will create and foster projects and programmes that focus attention on Bert’s musical legacy and be a pivot for interaction between Bert’s admirers, associates and friends.

Bert Jansch, legendary songwriter and guitarist, is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential musicians of all time.

Since the 1960s, musicians have been held spellbound by his groundbreaking acoustic guitar playing and emotive songs. Jimmy Page, Neil Young, Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler, Beth Orton, Devendra Banhart and Pete Doherty are among his countless devotees, leading new generations to discover Bert Jansch.

Bert began performing his unique synthesis of folk, blues and jazz in the early 1960s in the folk clubs of London. His iconic debut album, Bert Jansch (1965), caused a sensation for its innovative guitar technique and powerful songs, and has been phenomenally influential to this day, cited by legions of guitar players (famous and otherwise) as a major inspiration. Bert pioneered innovative treatments of traditional folk, and took this further with the acoustic supergroup, Pentangle (1967-1973), that he founded with John Renbourn, Jacqui McShee, Danny Thompson and Terry Cox.

Bert recorded over 20 studio albums in his long career and was performing, solo and as part of the reformed original line up of Pentangle, until a couple of months before his death on 5 October 2011. He was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Folk Awards and made an honorary Doctor of Music at Edinburgh Napier University. He leaves us an impressive catalogue of songs and arrangements, carried in the hearts of millions who over the last fifty years have been touched—and in many cases irrevocably changed—by the emotional resonance of Bert’s music.
