Bert Jansch Foundation Associate Artists

The Foundation is recognising outstanding creativity and dedication to their art, in appointing two Bert Jansch Foundation Associate Artists.

We are delighted to announce Sam Grassie and Dariush Kanani are continuing as our Bert Jansch Foundation Associate Artists. We look forward to following their careers and facilitating opportunities for the public to meet them and hear their music.

Sam Grassie >

has achieved much acclaim for his performances and recordings. Hailing from Glasgow, where Bert was born, he has formed a trio fronted by singer/harpist Iona Zajac which they called Avocet after Bert’s 1979 instrumental album. Avocet the band has recorded two albums that have received rave reviews, and toured in England and Scotland. Sam is now a solo artist and is appearing as part of the Bert 80 celebration concert at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in November 2023.

Dariush Kanani >

has been recognised as one of the finest fingerpickers of his generation. Mentored by none other than the great John Renbourn and selected by Stefan Grossman to teach at his workshops and masterclasses, Dariush has also been invited to teach at the Bert Jansch Guitar workshops and to perform with many of today’s greats including Wizz Jones, Clive Carroll and Ralph McTell. He plans to record his second album in 2020.

Dariush hosted online shows with Around the world in 80 plays participants every Thursday in July 2020. Sam Grassie appeared on 23 July,
